Where do I go? How to Decide Between Urgent Care and the Emergency Room

May 31, 2013 by Molly Huff
When health issues arise, it can be frightening and deciding where to go for help can be confusing.  Do your injuries or condition justify a trip to the ER or does an urgent care facility make more sense? Affinity ExpressCare can handle any of your urgent care needs, but knowing in advance where you should go could be a life-saving tool.
Following are some guidelines on how to know where to turn in the event of a medical issue.
When you need to go to the Emergency Room:
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Severe bleeding or head trauma
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Sudden loss of vision or blurred vision
When an urgent care center, such as Affinity ExpressCare, can better meet your needs:
  • Minor burns or injuries
  • Sprains and strains
  • Coughs, colds and sore throats
  • Ear infections
  • Allergic reactions (non life-threatening)
  • Fever or flu-like symptoms
  • Rash or other skin irritations
  • Mild asthma
  • Animal bites
  • Broken bones
If you are in doubt, call ahead.  Affinity ExpressCare will let you know right away if they can accommodate your condition, and if not, they will direct you to the nearest emergency room.

We hope you have a safe and healthy summer, but if issues or injuries arise, we are here for you.  Click here to learn more about Affinity ExpressCare and their hours and location.
